Guangzhou China, June 8, 2011 - In 2010, import volume of acrylonitrile reaches 445,787 tonnes in China, while export volume of acrylonitrile is zero. Besides, the net import volume of its each major downstream product, such as ABS, acrylic fibers and NBR, is still very large in 2010. The demand of acrylonitrile obviously exceeds its supply much in China.

All Chinese acrylonitrile producers adopt the method of propylene and ammonia oxidation, which is simple and mature. However, due to short supply of propylene mainly used in the production of polypropylene, China's acrylonitrile production kept stable from 2006 to 2009, both in capacity and output. Fortunately, since 2010, more production lines start to be put into production in China.

China's acrylonitrile is mainly used in the production of acrylic fibers, ABS, polyacrylamide (PAM), NBR, etc. Though the consumption of acrylonitrile in acrylic fibers kept dropping since 2006 because of its high price and substitute of polyester fibre, the demand of acrylonitrile in ABS, PAM and NBR soars from 2006 to 2010 and will keep the trend in the coming five years in China.

To meet the domestic demand in China, over 400,000 tonnes of acrylonitrile is imported annually from 2006 to 2010, except 2008. It is expected that the import volume of acrylonitrile will decrease, but still keep a large amount in the following five years in China.
